March 11, 1988 was the opening day of the ten-day encampment. It was a cold spring with temperatures getting in the 40s at night. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
All day long people arrived. The parking areas filled up quickly and soon the land was dotted with tents. From nothing to a city in only hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meals were served from the Seeds of Peace kitchen, and all the while there were meetings and trainings, and drum circles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
A makeshift shack was used as the registration area. This became the information hub of the camp. People signed in, and signed up for volunteer tasks. Cooking, non violence training, peacekeeping, parking, rally site support. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
By the end of that Friday, there were thousands of people camping in the desert. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
