On September 13, 1987, over 50 grandmothers — of all ages and abilities — gathered at the entrance to the Nevada Test Site to protest the ongoing detonations of nuclear weapons.

Many of them asked the Wackenhut guards if their grandmothers knew what they were doing for work.

One grandmother, a woman in a wheelchair, crossed the cattle guard at the entrance and drove down the road. It took two guards to catch up with her and arrest her.

These women held a power that was greater than most, as it put the Wackenhut guards in the position of arresting older, and some elderly women. The interactions were less aggressive than in other demonstrations.

Barbara Wiedner was the founder of Grandmothers for Peace. She was a force of nature who spoke her truth with conviction and heart. She passed in 2001.
